Last week we attended the Community Playthings 'Day Of Play' Early Years conference in London, for a day of inspiration and networking.
We strongly believe in the importance of learning through play, and this belief was only reinforced after listening to the speakers and taking park in the activities put on.
The day offered a chance to connect with other practitioners, sharing moments of joy that playing children give to those caring for them throughout the day, and also a chance to reconnect with how we played as children.
There were some really engaging speakers to listen to and take advice from, and a lot to take away and bring back to the rest of the team.

Fly butterfly, fly! 🦋
During the last few weeks in Toddlers room, the children have been carefully looking after 5 caterpillars that they have fondly named 'Clarabel' 'Katie' 'Worm' 'Thomas' and 'Cow'. We have talked to the children about the life cycle of the caterpillars and have used the story 'The Hungry Caterpillar' to reinforce their understanding.
We have observed the caterpillars getting bigger and bigger, and then attaching themselves to the top of the jar. Lots of the children were able to tell us when they had formed "a cocoon", remembering the word from the story. After a few weeks of watching the jar closely we were lucky enough to watch 2 of the butterflies emerge from their cocoons which was very exciting! The children were fascinated to see the different colours that were on their wings and spent lots of time watching them move around and flutter their wings. It has been the source of much excitement and joy for all of the children.
On Tuesday we let the butterflies go as the they had been in the net for 5 days. Some of the children were brave enough to hold them on their fingers before watching them fly over the fence and into the sky.

On Monday, our Babies room were introduced to Earth Day 🌍.
The team created a chalk map of Earth in the room and used language such as globe, Earth, planet, sea, land, and talked about the colours green and blue.
The children were given the chance to make their own Earth from baubles and shredded paper to take home. This sparked further conversations about green and blue, and how the colours applied to land and sea.
Outside we used foil in our tough tray with some water and paints. As it rained, the children listened to the rain fall and the sound it made on the foil, which opened discussions about the rain, clouds and storms. As the children started to mix the colours we talked about different animals that lived in the sea.

Today is National Early Years Teacher Day! 🎉
It has been recognised as a day to celebrate the invaluable role that Early Years Teachers play in classrooms and settings.
Early Years Teachers are specialists in early childhood development, trained to work with babies and young children from birth to five. They have to meet the same entry requirements and pass the same skills test as primary school teachers, and many have been primary school teachers themselves, before moving into (or returning to) Early Years. They play an essential role in children’s development, and enhance the quality of both early education and childcare provision
Having an Early Years Teacher in a setting can also help significantly with the children’s transition from nursery to school - Early Years Teachers have direct experience of how a school works and how children can best be supported to make this important educational transition.
At Monkey Puzzle Hartley Wintney, we are lucky to have our own Early Years Teacher. Alison work in our preschool room and is vital in preparing our children for moving on to school. You can read her bio, and find out about her journey to becoming Early Years Teachers below:
